Joanne Buenzli Crane

In recognition of a beautiful life, whose influence is rooted for centuries to come

1976 - 2020

Joanne was born in 1976 in Lancaster, PA to Charles and Mary Kay Buenzli. She graduated from North Allegheny High School in 1994, and continued her education at George Washington University. Joanne earned her degree, Phi Beta Kappa, in International Affairs, minoring in International Economics in 1998.

In 2004, Joanne married her love - Timothy Jacob Crane. Soon, her family blossomed to include her truest joys in life, her daughters, Grace and Julia. She was a gourmet cook, known to be able to make an amazing meal simply from what was in the kitchen at the time - which was usually just as she was arriving home from the office.

Joanne served 8 years as CFO for the Economics and Statistics Administration, followed by 2 years as acting CFO and the Budget Director at NOAA. For the most recent 6 years, Joanne served as the CFO of the Census Bureau. She was a recipient of the Silver and Bronze Medal awards for Meritorious Federal Service, and was recognized by her employees as a manager who changed the culture of her organization into one where people felt respected and appreciated.

Joanne also dedicated her time towards the community, where she volunteered at the DC Rape Crisis Center and the Girl Scouts of America.

Joanne was known and loved as a whip-smart lady with a sense of humor and tenacity, and was a trailblazer for women, working mothers, and anyone she came into contact with. Joanne's legacy is in her passion shrouded with reason and truth, and will be missed dearly.

In lieu of flowers, Joanne chose to have donations made to help feed families in need.
